In the Spanish alphabet, ñ is an additional letter, not just an n with an accent mark, which is called a tilde. It is called an eñe and is pronounced “enye.” It is used in many words. Substituting a plain n, a whole different letter, can change the word.
The only letter in the Spanish alphabet that originated in Spain, the Ñ is not only a letter but a representation of Hispanic heritage and identity as well. The Ñ’s story started with 12th-century Spanish scribes.
For the Spanish ñ, press Ctrl + ~, then the n key.
The letter Ñ is technically the contribution of Spain to the Latin alphabet. The sound of this letter did not exist in Latin, but the evolution of the language and the emergence of Latin consonant groups such as GN, NN and NI gave rise to the letter Ñ.
