217 New Emojis Will Come To Devices In 2021
According to the new report by Unicode, it is a relatively minor update: 217 new emojis have been approved and will come to devices throughout 2021.
The new Emojis include a heart on fire โค๏ธโ๐ฅ, face in the clouds๐ถโ๐ซ๏ธ, a woman with a beard๐งโโ๏ธand new mixed skin tone options for couples.
Announced by the Unicode today, these form a release billed as Emoji 13.1 and come under a new schedule from the Consortium. Emojipedia released its latest sample images for this set and we’ll also present below.
Timeline of New Emoji:
- As a recap for those of you who haven’t been following the emoji saga as of late, Emoji 13.1 was created as an interim release due to the delay of Emoji 14.0, which was caused by the pandemic.
- We last heard about Emoji 13.1 a couple of days ago when Google’s versions of the emoji were shown off.
- The final list of 217 emoji for Emoji 13.1 includes a face letting out a sigh, a face hidden in the clouds, a dizzy face, a mending heart, a heart on fire, a bearded man, and a bearded woman.
What Emojis are coming out in 2021?
Smileys
Three smileys are new in this release, two of which are brand new, one which resolves a disambiguation.
- ๐ฎโ๐จ Face Exhaling
- ๐ตโ๐ซ Face with Spiral Eyes
- ๐ถโ๐ซ Face in Clouds
Hearts
Hearts are some of the most popular emojis, with Red Heart consistently in the top 10 emojis used on various platforms.
- โค๏ธโ๐ฉน Mending Heart. Mending Heart โ a red heart shown with a bandage across one side.
- โค๏ธโ๐ฅ Heart on Fire. Heart on Fire may be used for representations of desire or lust.
Beards
Users will get gender inclusive design, and new options provided for a specific woman or man variation.

- ๐ง๐ปโโ๏ธ Woman: Light Skin Tone, Beard
- ๐ง๐ผโโ๏ธ Woman: Medium-Light Skin Tone, Beard
- ๐ง๐ฝโโ๏ธ Woman: Medium Skin Tone, Beard
- ๐ง๐พโโ๏ธ Woman: Medium-Dark Skin Tone, Beard
- ๐ง๐ฟโโ๏ธ Woman: Dark Skin Tone, Beard
- ๐งโโ๏ธ Man: Beard
- ๐ง๐ปโโ๏ธ Man: Light Skin Tone, Beard
- ๐ง๐ผโโ๏ธ Man: Medium-Light Skin Tone, Beard
- ๐ง๐ฝโโ๏ธ Man: Medium Skin Tone, Beard
- ๐ง๐พโโ๏ธ Man: Medium-Dark Skin Tone, Beard
- ๐ง๐ฟโโ๏ธ Man: Dark Skin Tone, Beard
Couples
200 of the 217 new emojis approved today by Unicode are to permit skin tone options for ? Couple with Heart and ? Kiss.
When taking into account five skin tone options, each emoji requires 25 new sequences to allow a different skin tone for either person in the couple.
Four existing emojis multiplied by 25 new options, means 100 new emojis to support skin tones for ? Couple with Heart:

- ๐จโโค๏ธโ๐จ Couple with Heart: Man, Man

The same calculation applies for skin tone options in all variations of Kiss:

- ๐ฉโโค๏ธโ๐โ๐ฉ Kiss: Woman, Woman
- ๐จโโค๏ธโ๐โ๐จ Kiss: Man, Man
- ๐ฉโโค๏ธโ๐โ๐จ Kiss: Woman, Man
